The three reviews already posted that gave one star are completely off base, unfair and have nothing to do with the contents of the study guide, and I am surprised that Amazon posted them. They are simply a reaction to the fact that the CompTIA 10% voucher information was not included with the book. There are now instructions about the voucher on Amazons home page for the book.Though frustrating it is hardly a reason to trash the study guide. I rarely do reviews but when I saw this I wanted to give the book some justice. I have not yet taken the exam, but as a 20 year IT veteran I can certainly judge this book after perusing it. The book is written by known professionals with strong credentials and is thorough. It will teach you security and prep you for the exam. I do have one issue about it though. The CompTIA exam is arranged in six areas, or domains. Most study material is arranged likewise, but not this book. If this book is the foundation of your preparation it does not matter because in the various chapters all of the six domains are thoroughly covered. I bought this book as a secondary guide to an online course I am taking. So when I want to study up on a domain that I am weak in I cannot just go to one section of this book to study, I have to skip around in several chapters. For example if I want to study domain 1, Threats, Attacks and Vulnerabilities, I have skip around in various parts of five different chapters. So that is an issue for me, but wouldn't matter so much if this book is your primary study guide. In addition the online quizzes and flash cards are valuable as well.

Nice read. I bought it to help prep for the test. I would recommend this book to others looking to pass the cert.

Read through, this book and only used this book for studying, passed Sec+ on the first try.

This book is for reference. I would not use this book as your sole study material.Sybex: This book seems like you rushed to get it to the market. There are several mistakes. Example: Chapter 1 question review question #5 the answer is wrong. Chapter 7 question review question #20 wrong answer. I know this seems minor but to us IT professionals, if I find errors like these it makes you question the rest of the material. Please expand on the Linux portion in the future. If reading this book does not give you enough education to pass the test, please state such on the cover. Background: I read the book cover to cover. I got 100% on all exams, consistently.Result: Failure on the certification testFindings: The test had an enormous amount of commands relating to Linux. Which was not taught in the book. I am not allowed to give examples. The test is adaptive, so once I got one Linux question wrong it continued to give me those types of questions. The test seemed to fixate on stuff I did not know instead of seeing if I knew the rest of the material.Note: besides the financial resources, there was an enormous amount of reading and test taking. All of it was flushed down the toilet once the test found out that Sybex forgot to teach a subject in-depth enough to pass. Sybex, it would be nice if you sent me a voucher to allow me to test again. Thank you

Respectfully, the author is well known in regards to security and information security but this book fell short this time. It's referenced in the beginning pages as more of a "learning resource" which I found the book to be very through and "great" in that regards (REALLY, 4 stars for that, buy it!) however.. like "many other books" out there.. the book does not come close at all to prepping the candidate on the eclectic / obtuse syntax that is how the actual CompTIA SY0-501 exam is worded. The other author (Chuck) seems to have a well versed background in regards INFOSEC as well.... but both authors need to re-visit producing thier next book as either a "JOB REFERENCE MANUAL" in regards to infosec as a career OR have an actual book to STUDY FOR THE ACTUAL EXAM!

This is my experience after having read the book completely and taken the exam.Study time: 2 weeks (read further for why such a short time)My background* software engineer with ~15 years experience* personal interest and experience in hardware, networking, and security (manage my own network with multiple devices)* never taken a CompTIA test beforeSuffice to say I am not completely new to the topic and chose a shorter study time. I reviewed all the chapters multiple times and note that the book does cover all the topics addressed in the exam objectives.Dislikes* material on one subject is sprawled throughout multiple chapters instead of just one* many errors/typos and some are significant -- such as multiple choice where the answer key is incorrect, or diagrams that are incorrect* unhelpful diagrams -- they only provide diagrams for explaining easy concepts...the diagrams should be there to help explain difficult concepts* repeated info/filler text -- briefer descriptions would be better* example questions and practice tests rely mostly on wrote knowledge instead of application* almost no examples of what the performance-based portion -- 1 online sample that is trivialLikes* provides a basic overview of the material* provides online website with 2 practice tests, ability to take the quizzes (same info in the book), and create flashcards* includes an exam voucherPlease note: I'm not giving examples because I'm unsure what info I can legally divulge about the exam.On the whole, I was completely overwhelmed and surprised by the exam difficulty. I had 3 performance based sections that were quite involved and really tested your knowledge. I felt like these were fair and, while difficult, could be figured out. As for the multiple choice questions, these were insane. It involved very detailed questions about particular protocols and concepts. Perhaps most importantly is that it tests application, which is good...that's what a test should do. My issue is that this book did not prepare me for application. I know the basic concepts of each of these things, but as far as knowing nuanced details, this book is severely lacking. My overall opinion is that this book can be used as a launching point, but you NEED other material to study. I wish I could provide more direction on what to buy, but I have not researched that further. If it matters, I did pass the exam (minimally), but felt unsure of most answers -- like I had gotten lucky. In my sincere opinion the book did not contribute to that success as much as my knowledge from personal interest.
